Non Essential Amino Acid : Arginine
Arginine is abundant in protamines and histones, both proteins associated with nucleic acids. Newborns may not produce enough of it and it is therefore classified as an essential amino acid for babies.
What is it used for?
It is very useful in enhancing the immune system. It also increases the size of the thymus gland. It is used to release insulin from the pancreas. It is a component in human growth hormones too.
It is required in muscle metabolism and helps regulate weight control.
What if I don't have enough?
It is rare to be deficient in this amino acid but the side effects include impaired insulin production and hair loss.
What if I have too much?
It is rare to take have too much as well. Side effects include nausea, diarrhea, skin thickening, and coarsing of the skin.
What foods contain it?
Nuts, seeds, whole wheat, popcorn, soy, raisins, carob, chocolate, and brown rice.
