What Is It Used For?
It is used in the nervous system and elevates mood. It also helps memory and learning and is sometimes used as an appetite suppressant.
What If I Don't Take Enough?
It is rare to be deficient in this amino acid but symptoms include edema, weakness, skin lesions, liver damage, lethargy, and slow growth.
How Much Should I Take?
Pregnant women, people with high blood pressure, diabetes, anxiety attacks, and phenylketonuria should not take a supplement for this amino acid.
While the daily dosage is unknown, many supplements are taken at roughly 14mg per kg of body weight.
What If I Take Too Much?
It is rare to take too much but if you do you may experience headaches, nausea, and heartburn. It also dramatically increases your blood pressure. It can also cause nerve damage.
What Foods Contain It?
It is found in dairy, almonds, lima beans, avocados, seeds, and peanuts.
