Non Essential Amino Acid : Serine

Serine is required for metabolism of fat. It is also needed in tissue growth and the immune system. In the immune system it produces immunoglobulins and antibodies.

It is sometimes used in cosmetics as a skin moisturizer. It also helps form cell membranes, involved in the metabolism of purines and pyrimidines, and muscle synthesis.

What if I have too much?

No known toxicity levels have been established, however it has been found that very elevated levels of this amino acid can cause immune supression and psychological symptoms.

What foods contain it?

Dairy, meat, peanuts, soy products, and wheat gluten.
